Professional Practice Experience (PPE) refers to the internship,
affiliation, or clinical practicum that students participate in throughout their
HIM educational program. This experience is an important part of student
education and overall career development as it helps students assimilate theory
with practical application in order to prepare for work in a real-world
environment.
The purpose of IHIMA's PPE Call for Clinical Site Participation is to match
students with area HIM employers. A match supports students’ desire to find
clinical sites that they are interested in so they can complete their necessary
PPE. In addition to the 7 CAHIIM-accredited HIM programs in Indiana, there are a
number of other online programs that potentially have students in IHIMA's
geographic area who need our help to locate local facilities where students can
complete their PPEs.
By participating as an affiliation site, you agree to take HIM student(s) for a
non-paid extended period of time, mentoring them and allowing them to apply what
they've learned in a real-life environment. The student should be supervised,
but should also be considered a contributing member of the HIM staff. Depending
on the type of PPE, the student will observe and experience day-to-day HIM
operations, provide documentation and recommendations in workflow, and complete
special projects with supervision. Just a few examples of projects for students
include scanning and indexing patient forms, locating and retrieving information
in the EHR, conducting a cost-benefit analysis for new equipment, or assessing
the need for telecommuting.
AHIMA has developed a Clinical Site/PPE Guide which is an excellent reference
for more information about what is involved with serving as a clinical site.
Regardless of your setting, we encourage you to volunteer to serve as a PPE
site. PPE sites range from acute care hospitals to non-acute care sites
(ambulatory clinics, larger physician practices, LTACs, skilled nursing and
long-term care facilities, etc.) to consulting companies, HIM service providers,
and software vendors - just to name a few since these are all organizations that
employ HIM professionals.
As a bonus, clinical site mentors qualify for 1 CEU per calendar year (2 CEUs
per CE reporting cycle) regardless of the number of actual hours accrued or
students hosted.
If you are willing to serve as a PPE site, we ask that you complete a brief
survey to collect your information. IHIMA will keep all information in a central
database for program directors who are seeking placement of students. Thank you
in advance for your willingness to mentor and nurture our future professionals!
