Academic Scholarships

IHIMA’s Executive Committee will be responsible for reviewing all applications. Award recipients will be chosen by IHIMA’s Executive Committee and submitted to IHIMA’s Executive Board for approval. IHIMA is not compelled to select an annual recipient. Consideration is given to academic achievement and health information management experience of the applicant. 

IHIMA will notify applicants of the review committee’s decision prior to the IHIMA Annual Meeting. The name of the award recipients will be announced at the IHIMA Annual Meeting, posted on the IHIMA website, and distributed through IHIMA communications.

New Graduate Scholarship
The New Graduate Scholarship recognizes stellar graduates from CAHIIM-accredited HIM undergraduate or graduate degree programs in Indiana. This scholarship program reimburses the certification examination fee for the Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT). Each educational Program Director or designee may select one graduate per academic year to receive the scholarship.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Must be a student enrolled in an CAHIIM accredited HIM/HIT program in Indiana
  2. The applicant must be an IHIMA member.
  3. The applicant must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. 

To aid Program Directors in selecting their program’s New Graduate Scholarship recipient, the below evaluation criteria will be used:

  • academic success
  • volunteerism
  • engagement and passion for HIM 

Program Directors or designees should use the form below to submit their scholarship nominee before December 1st, 2024

To honor the New Graduate Scholarship recipient, we ask that the Program Director or designee submit a short paragraph about your student. This should include information such as the student’s accomplishments, plans for future, etc. – along with their headshot. IHIMA will publish this information and share with our members.

Undergraduate and Graduate General Scholarship
The General Scholarship recognizes undergraduate and/or graduate level students from a CAHIIM-accredited HIM/HIT Indiana program who demonstrate academic achievement and commitment to the field of health information management in Indiana. 

Eligibility Requirements for Undergraduate Students

  1. Must be a student in an CAHIIM accredited HIM/HIT program in Indiana.
  2. The applicant must be an IHIMA member.
  3. The applicant must maintain at least a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale.

Eligibility Requirements for Graduate Students

  1. The applicant must be a credentialed health information professional, (RHIT or RHIA), and hold a bachelor’s degree.
  2. The applicant must be provisionally accepted or enrolled in an accredited college or university as a full time or part time student. The course of study should be relevant to health information management.
  3. The applicant must be an active member of IHIMA.
  4. The applicant must reside or work in the state of Indiana.
  5. The applicant must have a 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale. 

The applicant must submit a completed application form by December 1, 2024. Items to include within the application:

  1. The applicant must submit two letters of recommendation from persons not related to the applicant. The reference letters must be from persons who are knowledgeable of the applicant’s character, education, and abilities.
  2. The applicant must submit with the application all transcripts for credits earned at their present school and any other colleges or universities the applicant has attended. Original transcripts or copies printed from the college or university official system can be submitted. If copies are submitted, they must contain university information.
  3. Resume
  4. Application Summary: a) What personal attributes does the applicant feel they could contribute to the health information profession, b) Include reasons for choosing the health information profession and a summary of future career goals, if known.
